Overview

This interactive and hands-on seminar provides clinical insights for assessing and using no-leak speaking valves with tracheostomies and ventilators for pediatric and adult patients. Attendees will learn through lecture, interactive polls, game-based learning, mock patient assessments, case studies, hands-on training, and demonstrations. The physiological impact of a tracheostomy on respiration, feeding and swallowing, pressure, and speech is reviewed, and attendees will learn the importance of early intervention and the potential impact on developmental milestones. Step-by-step assessment techniques for utilizing a no-leak speaking valve both with and without mechanical ventilation will be discussed and advanced techniques for successful placement and treatment will be reviewed through case studies. Considerations for improving communication, subglottic pressure, feeding and swallowing, and secretion management are addressed.

Bonus education opportunity: Registered seminar attendees will be granted access to a pre-recorded webinar, Fundamentals: Tracheostomy Tubes to Mechanical Ventilation. It is strongly recommended that this webinar be viewed. It is only available to seminar attendees and provides an overview of the basics of a tracheostomy tube, cuff management with inflation and deflation, and basic vent terminology. The webinar may only be accessed for the 48 hours before the in-person seminar. To receive continuing education for the webinar, attendees must complete the course, quiz, and evaluation in addition to the seminar requirements.
